MHP and NORVHN Team Up for Housing in Washington State

Our Community Development team is hard at work in Washington State, partnering with the North Olympic Regional Veterans Housing Network (NORVHN, aka Sarge's Place). Beginning in 2020, MHP began providing technical assistance with the goal of furthering this small but expanding nonprofit's  organizational development.

NORVHN serves Clallam and Jefferson Counties on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, striving to a dignified, and familial sense of living for veterans. The organization provides veterans emergency shelter and permanent housing, including a recently completed a 7-unit permanent supportive project (Hobucket House) built using modular housing—the first of its kind in the state. NORVHN also operates two innovative initiatives:

  •  The Attic, a secondhand store that provides household goods to veterans and their families during transitions into new housing and sells donated goods to the community to support the program.

  •  Sarge's Farmstand, a program that helps veterans grow their own vegetables, fruit, and chicken eggs, and shares extra produce with the community.

To date, MHP, through partner Economic Development Services, has worked with NORVHN to provide technical assistance on a number of organizational development goals, including evaluating current internal systems and processes, undertaking a feasibility study for expansion, updating the organization's by-laws, recruiting new board members, and completing a strategic planning workshop with the Board of Directors. We are currently collaborating to finalize the The Attic's business plan, slated for this coming January. Look out for a full story on MHP's work with NORVHN, coming soon to our website mhponline.org
